Description

  • Antiveduto Gramatica
  • Holy Family with the infant Saint John
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is stable with a clear varnish. There are some infilled losses visible to the naked eye, mainly in the sleeve and dress of the Madonna, and one below the Christ Childs thigh, and to the left of his raised forearm. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals that the varnish has been partially removed from the figures of the Madonna and Christ Child, the varnish over the rest of the painting fluoresces opaque. There is some suggestion of old strengthenings in the dark tones of the background behind Saint Joseph's head, otherwise little else is visible, bar few more minor recent scattered retouchings and strengthenings. Offered in a painted frame with gesso mouldings in fair condition.
