Description
- Antwerp School, early 16th century
- The Crucifixion with Saints Mary, Mary Magdalene and John the Evangelist
- oil on panel
Condition
The panel is flat and uncradled and retains its original rebate from its first frame on all four edges. The vertical, central join is now held by three butterfly battens inserted into the reverse. The painting is now dirty and its varnish a little faded. The paint surface appears in very good condition overall. Ultraviolet light reveals only limited, old restoration, mostly of a very local nature, for example to the cross, the robes of Saint John, the robes and face of the Virgin, and some parts of the sky.
Offered with a later parcel gilt and painted frame with columned and foliate decoration.
