Description

  • French School, 18th Century
  • Tulips and Other Flowers in an Urn on a Stone Ledge
  • oil on panel
  • 20 1/2 by 16 1/2 in.; 52.1 by 49.1 cm.

Condition

Oil on cradled panel. The surface has areas of grey-white throughout the background and there is a thinness to the picture; in areas, the grain of the wood is visible in areas. There is evidence of a vertical panel break, with associated inpainting visible to the naked eye, extending from the top to the bottom edge of the work just right of the urn. Under UV light, the varnish has been selectively cleaned. It fluoresces green over the majority of the work, though the darker plant matter, such as the stalk at the center of the bouquet and the leaves to the right, have been retouched. There are also scattered dashes of inpainting to address losses in the lower third of the work.
