  • Rachel and Jacob Unblocking the Well
  • oil on canvas
  • 38 by 51 1/8 in.; 96.5 by 129.9 cm.

Provenance

In the family of the present owner since circa 1930.

Condition

Oil on canvas. The canvas has relaxed on the stretcher. The work is in relatively untouched condition. There are three lines of horizontal losses -- one in Rachel's elbow, one in her dress across the hips, and another below her knees. There is additional scattered paint loss throughout the work, though especially in the right half of the work and in the male figure. There is a zigzag patterned tear in the sky at upper right. Abrasions at the extreme edges. Surface dirt, dust and a very dirty varnish. Under UV light, there are no apparent inpaints visible though the varnish does fluoresce green.
