Laid down. Three substantial stains that appear to be water stains/splashes in the upper left quarter of the sheet. A number of other small brown stains, two located at the right margin and another lighter stain in the lower half of the horse's body. A couple of repaired tears one in the upper right corner and one in lower right corner. Two tiny holes located just above the horse's hoof. Catalogue Note

The distinctive technique seen in this drawing is also to be found in others in the Pierpont Morgan Library and the Uffizi1, and in a drawing of A kneeling Youth with Subsidiary studies of his foot and hand, apparently by the same hand, sold in London in 1995.Mary Newcome Schleier confirmed the attribution to Tavarone at the time of the 2003 sale.

This study was probably inspired by a model in bronze or silver, rather than executed from life.
