Catalogue Note

Although the strong blue tonality is a little unusual for Moreau, and in some ways reminiscent of artists of the following generation such as Antoine-Pierre Mongin, the details are typical of Moreau, as is the slight inconsistency of scale between the figures and the background.  Moreau was highly skilled in rendering landscape and architecture, and above all in his delightful lighting, as seen here.
