Description

  • After Willem van de Velde the Younger
  • A States yacht running down to the flagship Zeven Provincien, with other ships nearby firing guns in salute
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The painting has an old relining. The paint surface has thinned and is covered by a discoloured varnish. There are also some discoloured retouchings in the sky, centre right and scattered elsewhere. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an extensive campaign of restoration in the corner, lower right, encompassing most of the sky and scattered throughout the boat and sea. There are three repaired vertical tears to the right of the main ship, the largest of which measures 10 cm. and other scattered minor retouchings. This lot is offered in a gilt wood frame with mouldings, which is dirty and with some minor knocks, but otherwise structurally sound.

Catalogue Note

A copy after the picture now in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (inv. no. 60-16).1 The scene probably records the assembling of the Dutch fleet in 1672 before the Battle of Texel against the French and English, which was the final major confrontation of the Third Anglo-Dutch War.
There are at least two other known versions of this picture, the first is also held at the National Maritime Museum (inv. no. 41-4), and the second is in the Glasgow Art Gallery.2
