Estimate
15,000 - 20,000 GBP
bidding is closed

Description

  • Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot
  • Village street with peasants carousing outside an inn
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Believed to have been in the collection of the family of the present owners for at least 35 years.

Condition

The canvas has an old relining that is still sound. The painting is now dirty and its varnish is patchy and discoloured. The paint surface is in reasonably good overall condition but has suffered from minor wear in a number of areas, for example in the side of the house and figures in the left and central foreground, and the figures and horseman in the lower right corner. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals old restoration to all of these areas, and in addition a scattered series of old repaired damages (circa 2 by 2 cm each) in the sky, and a series of 7/8 smaller losses scattered along the foreground. Offered in a gilt plaster frame with some losses.
