Condition

The canvas has a firm relining, and the paint surface has been slightly pressed as a result. Overall the paint surface is stable, with a clear and even varnish. The brown shades in the foreground have suffered a degree of wear, and in some places the ground is visible. The retouchings to these thinned areas are slightly discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows restrengthening to the darker pigments in the foliage and undergrowth. The lower right corner has been most heavily restored, probably on more than one occasion. The sky has been sensitively restored: there is a large network of infilling of craquelure along the upper margin, and to a lesser extent in the line of the horizon. There is also a small patch of dense retouching to i the sky to the left of the high trees, measuring 5 by 4 cm. This lot is offered in a gilt wood frame, with losses but structurally sound.
