Provenance

Senator Johann Heinrich Gaedertz (1781-1855), Lübeck, recorded as no. 36 in the 1840 family inventory;
Thence by descent.

Exhibited

Wiesbaden, Landesmuseum, on long term loan since 2009 and on permanent view since 2013.

Condition

The canvas has an old and sensitive relining that has not flattened the paint surface. The painting is in very good condition, the surface is secure and the varnish appears even and only slightly discoloured. There are no major damages to the naked eye. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick varnish that fluoresces opaquely, making it difficult to evaluate any possible early restoration. Only very few, scattered strengthenings are visible in the darker tones. This lot is offered in a simple brown carved wood frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

Johann Heinrich Gaedertz was a successful businessman and senator in his native town of Lübeck. He and his wife shared an interest in old master paintings and acquired a large collection, with a particular focus on 17th century Dutch pictures. Most of these were displayed in a purpose-built gallery at their home where the couple frequently entertained.
Whereas the majority of the 300 paintings in the Gaedertz collection was sold by descendants at auction in Lübeck on 21 September 1864, the present picture has remained in the possession of the family until today.
