Description
- Willem van Mieris
- The penitent Mary Magdalene in a landscape
- signed and dated upper left: W.van.Mieris.Ft 1718
- oil on panel
Condition
The panel is uncradled. There are two fine vertical splits right through the panel, the first from the right runs all the way down, the second half-way down.
The paint surface is very dirty. There are discoloured retouchings along three splits; the first from the right runs 3/4 the way down the panel, the second and third run all the way down. There are also slightly discoloured minor retouchings in the Saint's neck and lower chest, in the area to the right of her bent arm, as well as around the crucifix. However, details like the thorny bush lower right and the pages of the book are beautifully-preserved and crisp.
Inspection under ultraviolet light shows a very milky varnish. It also shows the aforementioned retouchings, and further scattered retouchings in the sky, in the Saint's body and drapery, all very small. There has been restrengthening to the darker accents of the plants on the ground.
Tis lot is offered in an elabroate composite carved and gilt wood frame, with one loss to the carved decoration on the right margin.
