Description

  • Giovanni Paolo Panini
  • A capriccio of classical ruins with figures, with the Basilica of Maxentius in the distance
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has been recently relined, which has resulted in a flattened paint surface. The sky and clouds have dirtied but should respond well to cleaning. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an even varnish and retouching throughout the clouds and sky, to both the paint surface and to craqulure. The architecture and figures are largely free if retoching and are in good condition. The work is offered in a gilt wood carved frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

This composition derives from a painting by Panini in a Roman private collection. Here though, the Temple of Janus is replaced with the Basilica of Maxentius and the Farnese Hercules with the statue of a female goddess.1
