Description

- The Milkmaid
- oil on copper
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 12 December 1990, lot 180, for £13,000 to the present owner.
Condition
The copper sheet is uncradled. The surface is flat. The paint surface is stable, secure and clean. The colours are vibrant. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an even varnish and very few very small scattered retouchings in the grass, dog and tree at the left, in the shirt of the man, the cow at right and the house. These retouchings are minimal and have been delicately carried out. Overall the work is in good condition.
The work is offered in a simple carved wood frame with a few minor knocks and losses.

Catalogue Note
The composition is based, with some small variations, upon Lucas van Leydens' own engraving of 1510 (Hollstein 158, R. Vos, Lucas van Leyden, 1978, p. 179, no. 59), an original of which accompanies this lot. The style is close in handling to that of the workshop of Jan Brueghel.
