Condition

The canvas has an old relining. The paint surface is better preserved in some areas than others, with the original impasto particularly well preserved in the areas of water. There are paint losses in the following areas: in two places along the far left edge, 1 cm and 5 cm from the top left corner; two close together along the far right edge, 5.5 cm from the top right corner; one in the middle of the lower edge of the picture; some losses to the fabric held by the central female figure and the putti; two losses to the left of the head of the young woman offering up the shell; two small losses in the flesh areas of the foremost young woman; and a loss near the foot of the fair-haired putto pulling the reins of the dolphins. Diagonal scratch 5.5 cm from lower edge and 32.5 cm from right-hand edge. The varnish is somewhat discoloured and patchy. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals retouchings and strengthenings throughout, some of which have discoloured and are visible to the naked eye. The heaviest areas of retouching are limited to more peripheral areas of the composition such parts of the volcano to the far left and the fabric between the two air-borne putti; the figures are generally in fair condition. Offered in a gilded wooden frame with plaster decoration in neoclassical style.
