Provenance

John Henry Montagu Manners (1886–1940), 9th Duke of Rutland, Belvoir Castle;
By whom sold, London, Christie's, 16 April 1926, lot 62 for 130 guineas, to Lacey;
Acquired for the present collection before 1978.

Exhibited

Dordrecht, Dordrechts Museum, Aelbert Cuyp en zijn familie, 12 November 1977  8 January 1978, ex-catalogue.

Condition

The panel is constructed of three planks, joined vertically; it is uncradled, flat and stable. There are some very minor losses due to frame abrasion along the upper and right margins. A small vertical crack, measuring approximately 7 cm., runs up from the lower edge in the forearm of the sitter. The varnish fluoresces opaquely under ultraviolet light, but reveals wash retouchings in the background, to improve its evenness. There are also more localised retouchings to the face: a diagonal area of restoration measuring approximately 10 cm., which runs from the nose, through the lips and to the top of the ruff, and another area on the forehead and around the hair. An area of the wrist has also been retouched. The panel has been recently cleaned and the restoration is well carried-out. In overall reasonable condition. Offered in a plain stained wood frame.

Catalogue Note

This was presumably painted by Aelbert Cuyp in the 1640s when he was working for the family workshop of his father, Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp, much of whose output consisted of half-length or bust-length portraits similar in style to this one.
