Description
- Matteo Rosselli
- The Adoration of the Shepherds
- oil on canvas, octagonal, in an elaborate carved and gilt wood frame
Condition
The canvas has been recently relined. The surface is flat. The paint surface is generally clean, barring some discolouration to the blues of the sky, perhaps due to a dirty varnish. A small area of paint loss is visible at the lower left and there is an area of scattered paint loss at the upper centre. A retouching measuring approximately 3 by 3 cm can be seen on the left arm of the kneeling shepherd at left, a horizontal retouching measuring 12 cm is visible in the yellow drapery of the shepherd at the right and further retouchings can be seen throughout the standing shepherd and the donkeys. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick varnish and further scattered retouchings throughout. The Virgin and Child are largely free of retouchings.
The work is offered in a gilt carved frame with a carved cherub's head at the top, in good condition.
