Description
- Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Sassoferrato
- The Madonna at Prayer
- oil on canvas, oval
Condition
The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is secure and very clean, with the colours remaining strong. There are a few small scattered bands of discoloured retouchings in the white fabric and a retouching measuring 2 by 1 cm can be seen in the blue mantle just to the upper right of the hands. A retouching measuring 2 by 2 cm can be seen between the eyes. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these retouchings and reveals further scattered and delicate retouching throughout the flesh tones and fabrics.
The lot is offered in an oval gilt wood frame.
