Description
- Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio
- The Fortune Teller
- reportedly inscribed on the reverse of the original canvas: FCO CTIA
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has a recent and firm relining, which has resulted in a flattened paint surface. The paint surface is secure and clean. The face and hands of the figure at the left have sunk somewhat. Otherwise the colours remain strong. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a cloudy varnish and delicate retouchings throughout the flesh and drapery of the figures.
The work is offered in a gilt carved frame with incised floral decorations, in excellent condition.

Catalogue Note
The Maestro dei Giocatori has previously been suggested as the author of this work. This anonymous Caravaggesque painter, first identified by Gianni Papi, worked in Rome during the second and third decades of the 17th century, and seems to have been especially influenced by Cecco del Caravaggio and Tommaso Salini.1
