Condition

Hinged to the mount at the upper margin. Overall in good condition. Light scattered foxing throughout the sheet - barely visible. Light brown staining along the left margin.Two small splashes of wash lower right corner - possibly studio stains. Two brown stains at the upper margin from where sheet was previously hinged. Black chalk and wash remains strong. Sold framed.

Catalogue Note

Gael was reputedly a pupil of fellow Haarlem masters, Philips Wouwermans (see lot 93) and Isack van Ostade, and one can certainly see the influence of Wouwermans in the present sheet.
