Catalogue Note

Son and pupil of the Haarlem still-life painter Pieter Claesz., Nicolaes Berchem soon found his niche in landscape painting, a genre in which he was immensely successful.  His early drawings are somewhat eclectic in style and frequently relate to his paintings, but from 1653 on he began to introduce Italian motifs into his works, and also started to draw with greater freedom.  By the time this fine landscape was made, two years later, Berchem's atmospheric landscape style had reached its full maturity.
