Condition

The drawing is hinged in several places on the new backing sheet. The paper is buckled and darkened. The sheet must have been detached from an old backing. The surface is slightly rubbed. There is a small red stain at the bottom left, and a few light brown stains towards the top margin of the sheet. Sold mounted and framed in a modern gold frame.

Catalogue Note

Pepper published the present drawing in 1984 together with another study in the Academia de San Fernando, Madrid.1  He related both these works to a painted Salvator Mundi, then in a private collection and subsequently sold in 2007 (fig. 1).2  The painting was executed by Reni for the altar of the Rosary in the parish church of Santa Maria degli Alemanni, just outside Bologna.  It is identifiable with the painting referred to by Masini in 16663 and also seen in the same church by Malvasia.The painting was dated by Pepper, on stylistic ground, to circa 1633-34.
