Catalogue Note

The fact that all of the contours are indented indicates that this drawing was made as the design for a print, but no corresponding engraving has been identified.  Tempesta often treated subjects from the Passion of Christ and was was much influenced by Northern artists, particularly by his master Stradanus, as is evident from the composition of present sheet.
