Catalogue Note

This characteristically unconventional double-sided sheet has been dated by the late Gert Schiff to 1812.  Fuseli's varied and radical interpretations of the human figure are a much celebrated aspect of his oeuvre. His imagination appears to have been fired by the female form and he created over one hundred and fifty fantasized ‘portraits’ of women in his close circle.

Prior to entering Jan Krugier’s collection, the present drawing was owned by Randal Davies, a collector in the circle of the art-historian Paul Oppé, then Professor Blackman, an eminent agricultural scientist and subsequently by Professor Halsband, an authority on 18th Century English literature.
