Catalogue Note

This drawing is a preparatory study for Kauffman’s oil Servius Tullius, which she painted at the request of Catherine the Great in 1785. Although the composition seen here is close to that of the oil, at the time Kauffman drew this work, she was still experimenting with the number of figures and the details of the interior.

Servius Tullius was King of Rome between 578-535 BC. Kauffman depicts him as a baby, in the house of his predecessor, King Tarquinius Priscus. Later in life, Servius married Tarquinius' daughter, Tullia, before eventually being murdered by his own daughter and her husband, his son-in-law. We would like to thank Dr Baumgaertel for her help when cataloguing this lot.
