Condition

The medium has remained well preserved. The paper has darkened a little and under a raking light it is possible to see that there are a few (minor) areas where the surface has been rubbed. The upper left hand corner is discoloured. There is a fox mark (partially hidden) located in the lower left hand section of the sheet. The sheet is laid down.

Catalogue Note

A previously unrecorded drawing, this rapid study is unusual in using only black chalk. It shows the assurance of the artist’s technique and the colour and subtle shading that he was able to produce without using white chalk to articulate the image.

The drawing is very like the animated chalk study in Aberdeen Art Gallery that dates from the early 1780s.1 We are very grateful to Hugh Belsey, M.B.E, for his help in cataloguing this work.
