Catalogue Note
Stylistically this double sided sheet can be dated to the second or third quarter of the 1770s. The images do not relate to any surviving paintings by the artist but instead they loosely represent themes and ideas that occupied Romney’s mind at this time. The female figure may be connected to the story of the Destruction of Niobe’s Children, while the man festooned by his family is reminiscent of the Departure of Hector. We would like to thank Alex Kidson for his help while cataloguing this work.
