Description
- Aert Schouman
- A bird catcher and his family seated in a port, after Jan Weenix
- Watercolour and gouache;
signed with initials, dated and inscribed, verso: A:S na Weenix. 1745
Catalogue Note
Like lot 87, the present work is an 18th century copy by Schouman after a 17th-century Dutch artist, in this case Jan Weenix. The composition and subject are typical of the work of Weenix, who frequently portrayed figures set in Italianate, seaport settings. A characteristic example of his works of this type is in the Petit Palais.1
