Condition

Window mounted on japan paper. Some slight areas of thinning at the upper left and right corners, and the lower left, which is visible only when the drawing is held up to the light. A small nick to the centre right of the lower edge. A small brown stain to the upper centre left. The red collector's mark on the verso has caused a very tiny red stain near the lower left corner of the sheet. Where the ink is thickest it has sunk very slightly, but this does not impact the drawing. Overall the sheet is in good condition.

Catalogue Note

As Sumowski noted (loc. cit.), this drawing is comparable in style to works by Koninck such as the Christ Among the Doctors, in Leipzig (Sumowski 1398X) and the Last Supper, in the Amsterdam Museum (Sumowski 1420X). Though it was formerly attributed to Hoogstraten, the distincive, angular figure types and broad yet subtle use of wash are entirely typical of Koninck. On the basis of similarities between the landscape details and a signed and dated landscape drawing of 1660, formerly in the Koenigs Collection (Sumowski 1358), Sumowski proposes a dating of circa 1660 for the present drawing too.
