Description

  • Antoine-Charles-Horace Vernet, called Carle Vernet
  • A caricature of a Frenchman on horseback
  • Watercolour over traces of black chalk

Condition

Glued by the two upper corners to a sheet of card. There is some discolouration and staining to the sheet, most notably to the upper margin, most probably as a result of the adhesive by which the sheet has been hinged. There are areas of foxing and surface dirt throughout. The medium itself is still in good condition, with the image strong.

Catalogue Note

Although Carle Vernet was an accomplished artist in many genres (see lots 133 and 134), he is most renowned for his depictions of everyday scenes and sporting life.  He had a keen eye for human behaviour, and clearly delighted in capturing the stereotypes of his time, and highlighting the humorous elements of national characteristics. The present sheet is a caricatural study of a Frenchman on horseback, whose steely stare is amusingly contrasted with his awkward posture in the saddle.
