Catalogue Note

This vivid and colourful composition depicts the nets, ropes and baskets inside a fisherman's grotto.  The maritime theme was to run through many of Lepic's compositions and it was a much loved subject for the artist.  However, the present sheet is a rare example of one of his interior scenes.  In 1883 Lepic was appointed an official maritime painter by the state, following his growing popularity after receiving a medal at the 1877 Salon for his painting, The Smashed Boat.  Whilst a talented and versatile artist in his own right he is perhaps best remembered today as a friend of Edgar Degas, who included him in eleven paintings and pastels.
