Provenance

Friedrich Jakob Gsell (L.1108. Born in Strasbourg, Gsell (1812-1871) settled in Vienna and was an important dealer in the wool trade. A patron of Rudolf von Alt, his significant art collection was housed in the 'Galerie Gsell' at his home on the Schmöllergasse),
his estate sale, Vienna, Künstlerhaus, 14 March 1872, lot 758;
Georg Plach (L.1188. Plach, 1818-1885, was a pre-eminent Viennese art dealer and collector);
Moritz Edler von Kuffner; thence by descent

Condition

The sheet is not laid down, but hinged to the mat at the upper left and upper right corners, the left edge has been thinly backed on the reverse. Two old diagonal folds are faintly visible, one above the arch and the other through the door. The sheet has been sunned, the paper tone is somewhat uneven notably above and to the sides of the arch, and there is a mat mark near the four edges of the sheet, covered by the mat. Presented in a narrow gilt frame under glass.
