Catalogue Note
Deshays was Boucher's favourite pupil, and married his daughter. He was strongly influenced not only by his master but also by Italian precursors, notably Castiglione, to whom this broad oil on paper was formerly attributed. A closely comparable oil sketch by Deshays was sold, New York, Christie's, 28 January 1999 (lot 136), and two others in the same technique were in the Paignon Dijonval collection.1
