Description

  • An Austro-Hungarian silver and gilt house altar with a ¿Schü tzmantel Madonna", coat of arms
  • silver and gilt
  • 70cm, 27 1/2in high
in Troubador style, formed as a tabernacle enclosing the figures of Count and Countess Erdödy de Monyorókerék dressed as Romance figures kneeling before the Virgin queen shielding family members under her cloak before a Lapis Lazuli ground, behind doors applied  with figures of various male and female saints and inscribed on one with male and on the other with female family Christian names, surmounted by St George and the Dragon and inscribed on the back with dedication for the 50th anniversary of the count and countess dated 1857, original lock and key,  on a black marble plinth

Commissioned in 1857 for Count Georg von Erdödy de Monyordkareck (1785- 1859) and his wife countess Marie Ottilie Gobertine born von Aspremont-Lynden (1787- 1866)

Condition

overall good condition, equestrian figure detached, one putti at top loose, would benefit from professional cleaning.
