  • A group of snuff and cigarette cases, various origins and dates,
  • silver, gold, onyx, mother of pearl, enamel, ivory (miniature)
comprising three silver cigarette cases, the first decorated in matt gunmetal enamel, the lid applied with a princely crown, maker's mark AxK, Vienna, circa 1925, rim numbered 8297, 8.5cm., 3 3/8 in. wide; the second, plain rectangular, Carl Heiss, Vienna, circa 1917, applied with an enamelled coat-of-arms under a ducal coronet, the inside dated Wels, Herbst 1917, and signed; the third, Carl Heiss, Vienna, circa 1920, smartly decorated in coloured gold and black and red enamel, onyx thumbpiece; a plain simulated tortoiseshell example applied with a jewelled rabbit’s head, a mother-of-pearl example in 18th century taste with engraved and foiled rocaille ornament; and an oval German black glass portrait gold-mounted snuff box, the lid inset with a miniature of a girl, circa 1795, Austrian School

Condition

first in excellent condition, 2nd with dents on lid, 3rd good condition, enamel chipped in one place on base and some scratching. jewelled thumbpiece chipped. 4th with cracks in lid, 5th Hinge damaged, and mother of pearl chipped around hinge. Last : base reglued, lid smashed and re-glued. Catalogue Note

Lilly von Schnitzler, née von Mallinckrodt, was born in 1889 in Cologne. A prominent member of German high society, she was a passionate collector and patron of Expressionist art. She was a lifelong friend of Max Beckmann for whom she sat several times. Ten of her paintings by Beckmann were donated in 1979 to the Ludwig Museum in Cologne. At her house in Murnau, Bavaria, she entertained many celebrated artists, writers and academics to parties to which invitations were much in demand. She died at home in 1981.
