Description

  • A jewelled four-colour gold and enamel royal presentation snuff box, German, circa 1830-1840,
  • gold, diamond, enamel
  • 9cm., 3 1/2 in. wide
rectangular, the lid applied with the diamond-set cypher and crown of Friedrich Franz I, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1756-1837), on a translucent blue enamel ground, within scrolling foliage and roses in multi-coloured gold on a sablé ground, echoed on the sides and base, alternating with engine-turned panels, the lid with a wide border of diamond-set flowers and gold scrolls picked out in black enamel, unidentified maker's mark and town mark

Condition

good condition apart from lid lining replaced, would benefit from professional cleaning, Weight: 153.0 gr. The Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, located in Northern Germany, was created in 1701 and held by the House of Mecklenburg at Schwerin. After the Napoleonic wars, Friedrich Franz I (1756-1837) was raised to the dignity of Grand Duke at the Congress of Vienna (1815).
