Catalogue Note

Jeremiah Dummer (1645-1718) was the first native-born New England goldsmith.  English-born goldsmith John Hull records in his diary for July 1, 1659, "I received into my house Jeremie Dummer and Samuel Paddy to serve me as apprentices eight years.  The Lord make me faithful in discharge of this new trust committed to me and let this blessing be to me and them"; the beginning of the American silversmithing tradition.
