Catalogue Note

A RARE COLLECTION of proclamations and decrees from the troublesome years 1826-1828, when Bolivar's attempts to create a centralised state for Gran Colombia (the territories of the former Spanish Viceroyalty of New Granada) were falling apart through the desire for greater federalisation from different parts of the state. Bolivar had been declared President in 1821, but internal dissent led to the calling of a constitutional convention at Ocaña in April 1828, shortly after the last of these decrees.

The final item in this collection, the flyer appealing to the Colombians and Bogotans, was issued as Bolivar was declared Perpetual Dictator, and in it he declares his sorrow at needing to leave Bogota for some months; in fact he never returned, as he died in 1830, shortly after resigning his presidency, and the state of Gran Colombia collapsed thereafter.
