Catalogue Note

Bandello (1435-1506) was prior of the recently-founded Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, and was uncle to Matteo Bandello, whose education at the convent he supervised at the time that Leonardo was painting his mural. The year after publication of this compilation of writings ("auctoritates") in opposition to the immaculate conception of Mary, the Franciscan Pope Sixtus IV authorised the celebration of the feast of her conception.
