Catalogue Note
Whilst we often see Lowry painting the lonely and the isolated, he also had an eye for the quirky and humorous. In Man Walking with Dogs we see a purposeful figure striding along, smartly attired in suit and red bow tie. The work appears as a snapshot of Manchester life, momentarily captured, and the figure’s four-legged friends scurry past so fast as to be only just caught, one disappearing off the side of the board. Deftly painted, it is a charming moment of rare levity amidst his more sombre scenes of Salford life.
