Condition

Not viewed out of the frame. Oil on original canvas. The canvas appears sound. There is some craquelure to the more impasto areas of the painted surface, most apparent in the white painted area to the centre of the canvas, and along the upper horizontal edge. There are also some very minor flecks of loss across the work, most apparent in the upper left and right quadrants. In places, the surface of the paint appears slightly uneven, most likely inkeeping with the nature of the artist's materials. There is some light surface dirt and studio detritus across the work. Ultraviolet light reveals some scattered areas of minor retouching, with a few spots in the central white painted area and along the extreme edges of the bottom left corner and at the right vertical edge. There is also one spot in the centre of the upper horizontal edge, one spot at the base of the central black stripe in the upper left quadrant, and further very minor flecks in the bottom left quadrant, all of which have been sensitively executed. The work is float mounted in a painted white wooden baguette frame. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.

Catalogue Note

Terry Frost was the Gregory Fellow at Leeds from 1954-57 and while there his work developed in response to the bleak sparseness of the landscape of the Yorkshire Dales. In contrast to the bright palette inspired by the Cornish coastline, paintings from this period are dominated by strong black vertical forms. The palette of yellow, ochre, orange, brown, black and white was developed by Frost in a series of works at this time evoking the hues of late summer turning into autumn and the effect the changing light had on the Yorkshire landscape as the summer came to an end.
