Provenance

New Art Centre, London, where acquired by the present owner

Exhibited

Kyoto, Gallery Sanjo-Gion, Exhibition of the Artists at St Ives in England, September 1989, un-numbered exhibition.

Condition

Not examined out of frame. The sheet appears to be fully laid down. The edges of the sheet are uneven, which appears to be consistent with the artist's working materials. There are some creases, small tears and losses at the edges of the sheet, most notably at the upper left corner and along the right vertical edge. Some of these have been sensitively restored. There are also some creases and possible restored tears throughout the sheet, including but not limited to, an area in the sails and the sky. On close examination it is possible to see some cracking to the thicker areas of impasto in the sea and several scattered surface scuffs. Surface dirt is visible across the composition. With the exception of the above the work appears to be in good condition. Ultraviolet light reveals several small spots of florescence at the centre of the upper, lower and right edges which may be consistent with retouching. The work is float mounted on a brown linen covered board and presented in a rubbed gilt frame.
