Catalogue Note

Lee Man Fong absorbed values from both the Eastern and Western world where he translated these ideas into his works. Born in Guangdong, Lee Man Fong moved to Singapore then Jakarta where he began to pursue his artistic career. Thereafter, he spent 6 years in Europe which allowed him to nurture his art and explore painting techniques in the oil medium. By the late 1940’s, Lee Man Fong was able to converse in the two opposing styles, creating a unique persona in his pieces.

Throughout his career, Lee Man Fong’s oeuvre was a tribute to the natural environment. His collections are highly valued in Asian culture as his paintings are usually symbolic of the traditions he was accustomed to. The painting Cats is a special piece from his oeuvre, for the animal was rarely included in the artist’s wildlife paintings. In the Chinese tradition the animal is believed to bring good luck and fortune. The two cats in the artwork convey a sense of power and dignity in their repose. This painting is reflective of Lee Man Fong’s time abroad and the repeated themes that continued to inspire him throughout his career.
