Catalogue Note
Throughout his oeuvre the seascape was a common motif used to symbolize human struggle, echoing it with the waves and misty air. The present work aptly titled Perahu is reflective of this metaphorical relationship. The thick brushstrokes allude to the ocean, the rhythm of the waves as they continuously crash onto the shore. The choice grouping of reds, blues, and greens suggest a mixture of uncontrollable forces brought about by nature. Visible in the chaotic scene are hints of yellow scattered throughout the background. Representing a rising sun, it symbolizes a glimpse of hope at the end of the artist’s journey. The present painting is a joyful piece from his oeuvre, for it signifies the artist’s hope that happiness will prevail after enduring the obstacles that exist in life.
