Catalogue Note

Inspired by the beauty of his environment, Adrien Jean Le Mayeur embodied the spirit of Bali within his paintings dedicated to the island. Enamored by the island culture, the artist’s paintings are romantic portrayals of the archipelago as seen from a Western perspective.

Depicted with a tropical sensuality, the present lot Soir sur la plage de sanur is composed of two Balinese women lounging on the beach in the evening. The work is reminiscent of Impressionist aesthetics, for Le Mayeur has applied thick layers of paint to emphasize the lush landscape of Bali. Colors consisting of pinks, blues, and browns add a luminous quality to the composition that brings to mind the island sunset. As seen in the painting, the artist has also embellished the background with Balinese figures in the midst of their everyday chores, thereby instilling the painting with a rich context. A homage to the island landscape, the painting is a visual celebration of the artist’s great appreciation for the Balinese environment and people.
