Catalogue Note

As one of the founding fathers of modern Singaporean art, Cheong Soo Pieng had firmly established his practices in painting slightly stylized figures. Inspired by the Southeast Asian female, Cheong Soo Pieng’s figural paintings are mostly modest snapshots from daily lives. Executed in 1973, the present lot was completed during the period where the artist revisited his figural illustrations. Featuring the signature almond eyes and an elongated figure, Repose is a quiet portrayal of a young woman lying horizontally, seemingly occupied by her own thoughts. Other than the position itself, the title also suggested a tranquil ambience, arousing a similar pensive atmosphere in the painting.
