– Christine Ay Tjoe

As one of the most prominent female artists in the current Indonesian art stage, Christine Ay Tjoe is best known for her abstract paintings that are inspired by human emotions and her encounters with others. By merging colour planes with different lines and forms, the artist invites her audiences into a meditational dialogue. Titled Layers of Transcendence, the present work may be understood as a metaphor for the layers of the human mind. By covering the canvas with bright hues and energetic lines, Ay Tjoe used the overlapping brushstrokes to represent the intricacy and depth of human thoughts. Driven by raw emotions, the present piece is a continuation of the artist’s oeuvre, where she continues in exploring human emotions and spirituality.
