Catalogue Note

Works by Paresh Maity are often classified as 'narrative cultural hybridism', a trend of Indian painting that arose in the 1960s whereby artists used narrative to express their social sensibilities. The combination of soft and mellowed chromatic shades juxtaposed with dark hues are hallmarks of his works.

Maity was born in 1965 in a small town in West Bengal that was famous for its terracotta art. Growing up among this tradition, he paid for his education by making and selling clay idols of gods and goddesses. He first started painting with watercolour and then moved on to oil paints, training at the Government College of Art, Kolkata and finally the Delhi College of Art. Maity has had over sixty eight solo exhibitions around the world including India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, France, United Kingdom and the United States of America. He is also the recipient of a vast number of awards and his works are in the collections of the British Museum in London, Rubin Museum, New York, Commonwealth Institute, London and the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi among others.
