Catalogue Note

Satish Chandra Sinha was born in Calcutta in 1893 and studied under Percy Brown and J.P. Gangooly at the Government College of Art, of which he later became principal. Sinha followed the Western academic approach to art, placing an emphasis on perspective and realism in his work. Inspired by the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, Sinha's strength lay in the rendering of the female figure. Demonstrated in the current work, Sinha shows an awareness and understanding of light and its ability to create form. Here with a limited palette Sinha has created a humble portrait of a mother and child seated on the floor, their contours bathed in light and shadow.
