Condition
Executed on paper laid down on canvas; the edges are reinforced with tape. The surface is nicely textured and well preserved. Some very slight buckling in each of the four corners. A few hairline creases and repaired tears to the sheet, primarily along the perimeter of the work. Artist pinholes in each of the corners. A few scattered specks of dirt, which appears to be on the surface of the varnish in the lower center and right half of the composition. Under UV light some faint fluoresces along the extreme perimeter and towards the edge at upper center there is a small area of inpainting associated with some disturbance and a nick to the sheet. This work is in good condition.

Catalogue Note
The present work is a study for part of the decoration project for the fountain of Thonon-les-Bains, commissioned by the architect Louis Moynat in 1935, which consisted of a large fresco Baigneuses with two pendants: Éloge de la poésie (Orphée) and Éloge de l'architecture (Apollon).
André Lhote's artistic vision was a reflection of his deeply embedded views as an art theorist whose methods were based around the idea of the artist as an intellectual. He was a highly gifted teacher and proved influential to upcoming artists in his native Bordeaux as well as in Paris. Amongst Lhote's many achievements was his assistance in founding the group Section d'Or (so-called after the chapter in Da Vinci's Trattato della Pittura in which the making of gold is theorized). The present work confirms the aesthetic that Lhote strived for: it is a harmonious, colorful work that hints at abstraction without stealing from the beauty of the subject.
