Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Karen Thomas of Thomas Art Conservation LLC., 336 West 37th Street, Suite 830, New York, NY 10018, 212-564-4024, info@thomasartconservation.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. Although the dark background may be strengthened with a toning layer, the remainder of the picture appears stable with normal wear. Fragments of gold leaf in the background area of the circular region indicate this passage was likely once fully covered with gold leaf. The eagle symbolizing John the Baptist in the top left corner is heavily restored and scattered minor retouching is found elsewhere. Most of the restoration appears to be discernable under ultraviolet illumination, although more may exist below the strongly fluorescent thick natural resin varnish. Scattered small losses are found throughout. Brownish residue lodged in cracks and brushwork is likely a combination of aged varnish and dirt. No defects are discernable in the vellum primary support and the secondary panel support is stable and planar with cross grain battens inset into the verso.
